The sale of the cameras to Donny Ray turned out to be easy. He even wanted more than I had agreed to buy. So the installer made him a deal he would be stupid to refuse. The camera shop owner was thrilled with the money he made. But he was greedy. He wanted more money for the password. I had no choice but to pay him more.

I still needed cameras in the house, but I couldn’t afford to spend any more money. Money leaves a trail. Luckily, I had bought extra cameras from the shop owner, thinking I would install cameras in the lodge myself. My class schedule kept me from having the time to do that. I finally got cameras into the house so I had access to the cameras at both places.

It became my pattern. Running five miles and doing farm chores early in the morning. Then, I would spend fifteen to twenty minutes scrolling through videos before heading to my classes.

Angel and I would talk late at night while she was at the Academy. I never understood the pain people felt when they said they missed someone. I did now, though, and I wanted to hold Angel in my arms and feel the rise and fall of her body against me as she breathed.

The EMT program ended in July. I passed the exams and began working part time for the ambulance service in Searcy while taking nursing classes at Harding. Angel’s Android phone was identical to mine. They both had an extra slot for a second SIM card, which meant we could have two phone numbers. The night she left the academy, we talked for two hours as she drove to North Little Rock. When she arrived, we said a difficult goodbye. We took our second SIM cards out and threw them away. We were afraid that if her phone was checked, the information on the second card could be traced to me and expose her for who she really was.

It was time to trust her, but most importantly, it was time to trust God and let Him protect Angel.

It was ten weeks later that I saw her. I almost didn’t recognize her. She had really cut her hair short. It was short on the neck and a little long on top, with a comb-over. She was now a bleach blonde. She puckered her lips a lot, making her face look thinner and sexier.

It was her body and her movements I recognized. I watched her longer than I should have and was going to be late for class. I realized that if I barely recognized her, and she was playing the Angie Lewis persona, she might pull this undercover operation off. But seeing her also made me miss her more. Now the real worrying began. I could tell myself a thousand times that she was under God’s protection, but it didn’t keep me from worrying.

Dad and I talked and prayed for an hour that evening. I did most of the talking, which meant he did most of the praying.
